A. J. Taylor & Co.

Mineral Water Works.

Arthur James Taylor was born in Chippenham on 13th Oct. 1869 and baptised on 9th Jan. 1870. His father Job Canning Taylor and mother Ellen Dale were married in Chippenham on 24th Oct. 1864 and were innkeepers at the Swan in River Street. The license was transferred to Job at the Petty Sessions of Thursday 6th October 1870 from Thomas Beszant, the brother of Henry Beszant who had kept the Inn since the early 1850's. Job Cannings Taylor was the son of Stephen Taylor and Sylvia Cannings who had married in Melksham on 9th Aug. 1820.

Arthur's father died on 25th October 1881 aged 54, having been baptised 4 days previously. He left the inn to his widow Ellen who ran it with the help of Arthur and his sister Lucy. By 1901 Arthur was the brewer there. Arthur married Rosina Maud Helps on 8th Sep. 1902 at St. Luke's, Brislington, near Bristol.

By 1903 Arthur was running the Swan and his mother Ellen died on 18th Feb. 1906 leaving him over £422, he was still at the Swan in 1907.

In the census of 1911 Arthur and Rosina have 4 children and Arthur is now the Hotel Proprietor of the George in the High Street which he is likely to have acquired in 1908 as the Swan were advertising for new staff that June . The Kelly's directory of 1911 also shows he has taken over the Mineral Water works from H. E. Corner.

Arthur in later life lived at Kirkdale, Bath Road, Chippenham. He died on 20th Jan 1955. At this time his son Percival Arthur George Taylor was running the Mineral water business. The company had closed by 1956.
