Buckeridge's Shop

    Albert Wilkinson Buckeridge was born in Newbury, Berkshire, on 18th Feb. 1838. On 25th Sept. 1866 he married Agnes Hewitt at St. Michael's church, Bray, Berkshire. The couple had a total of 14 children, of whom 4 had died by 1911. Albert died on 6th April 1923 in Calne. In 1871 Albert was running a grocer's shop in the high street in Staines, Middx. By April 1878 they were advertising for a female servant in Calne to help with the children.

    At the Calne petty sessions of Monday 26th Sept. 1881, Mr. A. W. Buckeridge, who already held a license to sell strong beer, applied for a retail beer license, but it was refused on account of 2 nearby fully licensed houses.
