George & Clifford Gazzard

Aerated Water & Ginger Beer Manufacturer


    George Gazzard was born on 4th Apr.1867 in St. Philip's, Bristol, son of Thomas Gazzard, a stoker at the gas works in St. Philip's, and his wife Mary Jane Wait. Thomas and Mary Jane (later just Jane) were married on 13th June 1859 at Bedminster St. John. In 1871 they were living at 21 Grafton Street, St. Philip's, Bristol. Thomas sadly ended up at Barton Regis Workhouse after the death of his wife in 1886.

    George married Emily Goldsworthy, daughter of Soda Water Manufacturer, James Goldsworthy, on 21st March 1891, in Bristol. George and Emily had 3 children: Stanley (b.1894), Hilda May (b. 9th July 1898) and Clifford Ernest (b. 7th July 1904). Stanley was a bottler in the Mineral Water Works as a teenager, but became a private in the Somerset Light Infantry in WW1, sadly he was killed at the Somme, France, on 21st March 1918. Hilda May married Albert Bennett in Bristol in 1922. She died in 1981. George Gazzard died on 31st July 1921 at 1 Clarence Street, Newtown leaving his estate to his widow Emily.

    Clifford Ernest Gazzard married Edith Marie Ewens on 11th Sept. 1927 in Bristol. He had taken over his father's business after George's death. He was still in business in 1938 (Kelly's Dir.) Clifford died in Blackpool, Lancs. in 1972.
