The Bristol and Bath Aerated Water
Company Limited was incorporated on 7 November 1871. Capital £10,000
in 2000 shares of £5 each.
"This company was formed to supply the
cities of Bristol and Bath, and also Cardiff, Bradford, and other
neighbouring towns, with all kinds of Aerated Waters, in Barrett's Patent
Corkless Bottles, the merits of which are well-known in London, Liverpool,
Manchester and other places, where they are in great demand. It is
proposed to manufacture the very best quality of Aerated Liquids, and the
promoters have received every encouragement from the managers of hotels,
&c. as well as families...
Prospectus, with forms of application, may
be had from the secretary, Mr. S. A. Edmonds, 56 Queen Square, Bristol."
Barrett & Co., the patentee of these
particular bottle closures, and supplier of the license to use said
patents, was already established in the cites of London, Liverpool and
Manchester at the time of the foundation of the Bristol branch.
In October 1878, George Edward Tate, one of
the company managers was sentenced to three months imprisonment for
stealing 156lb of Citric Acid from the company.
21 February 1883 the newspapers carried
the announcement "BRISTOL AERATED WATERS COMPANY. - This company
proposes to take over the goodwill and business of the Bristol and Bath
Aerated Waters Company, Limited (in liquidation). It was registered on the
12th inst., with a capital of £10,000 in £1 shares, with the following as
first subscribers: - T. H. Barrett, North Dulwich, merchant, 1 share; C.
G. Elers, Bond-Street, South Lambeth, soda-water manufacturer, 1; E. A. S.
Hounsel, Clifton, 1; S. Lang, Bristol, merchant, 1; H. M. King, Bristol,
1; W. Wotton, accountant, Taunton, 1; R. Corner, Bristol, hotel
proprietor, 1; registered without special articles." Unfortunately this
company was very short lived, and was issuing winding-up notices the
following January 1884, the same year that the Bath Aerated Water
Company Limited appears in that city.
BARRETT'S SCREW STOPPERED BOTTLING COMPANY
LIMITED quickly adopted the Newfoundland Road premises as its
Bristol office and was up and running by September 1884.
A public announcement in the Western
Daily Press - Tuesday 2 March 1886 p.4, gives an account of the state of
Barrett & Co. at that date, there was a major share release in order
to raise capital for the formation of a new company:
"Subscription list closes 3rd March for
London and 4th of March for Country.
BARRETT'S BREWERY AND BOTTLING COMPANY
LIMITED, Incorporated under the Companies Acts.
CAPITAL £300,000 in 60,000 SHARES of £5.
First issue of £250,000 in 50,000 Shares of £5 each,
Of which £166,670 in 33,334 Shares, are now offered for Public
Subscription.
The list of Directors at the time were as
follows

Park.

Streatham.
*Henry Barrett, Esq., Menival, North Dulwich.
*Mark H. Beaufoy, Esq., South Lambeth Road.
*R. H. Randall, Esq., Brewer, Vauxlaurens,

*G. F. Wills, Esq., Crewkerne, Somerset.
*C. G. Elers, Esq., 6 Kensington Court,
Kensington (Managing Director)
(* are Directors of the Vendor Company who
will join the board after Allotment).
This basically amounted to a sell-off of
the London branch of the company at Bond Street, Vauxhall, along with a
newly completed (Nov. 1885) brewery plant and 5 floor bottling stores, and
incorporating it into a new company with a focus of brewing bottled beers.
Barrett's Country Bottling Co. Limited
was formed in October 1886 with capital of £30,000 in £1 shares "in order
to buy and extend the business of Barrett & Co. (Limited) of Bristol,
Birmingham and Manchester, mineral water manufacturers and bottled beer
merchants. The London business of the same concern was lately sold to a
new company" (see above).
In 1887 Barrett's Country Bottling Co. Ltd.
in giving notice to the Bristol Bottle Exchange, claimed ownership of all
bottles bearing the names or trade marks of: "Bristol & Bath Aerated
Water Company Limited"; Barrett & Co. Limited"; "Barrett & Co.";
"Barrett's Country Bottling Company Limited"; Bottles bearing Sankey's
trade mark - SAN and a KEY - and Barrett & Eler's trade mark (a screw
stopper in a circle).
Barrett's continued at the Newfoundland Road
premises until 22 August 1889, when Brooke
and Prudencio took over the property.
